Martial Arts Classes are open to all UCI students and ARC Members.
Fall Classes do NOT meet over the Thanksgiving Holiday (Wed, 11/26 after 8pm - Sun, 11/30)

  Aikido is self-defense against kicks, grabs, punches and weapons. The Aikidoist safely neutralizes an opponent's attack by harmonizing the speed and direction of the attack.

  Capoeira, pronounced 'CapoWayDa' is a self defense based style developed in Brazil in the 18th century. The style resembles a dance/martial art whereby participants learn a combination of movements set to a distinct Brazilian beat. join our instructor for this dynamic and physical class.

  Shuai Jiao (Chinese Wrestling) is the oldest form of martial arts practiced in China. Discover ancient battle proven techniques developed over thousands of years, now refined into a competitive sport. Classes will teach gripping, throws, break-falling, and a myriad of techniques. Learn from He Guanda, a 2 time World Champ, 12 time Heavyweight Champ, former China National Team Coach, and current USA Team Coach.

  This style of Filipino martial arts is a self-defense form created by Grand Master Emeritus Leo M. Giron. The Giron System is a weapons based art composed of 20 styles including sword, stick, knife and empty hand techniques. Instructor DJ Marcia will guide students through the essential elements of this effective system and offer insight into the rich Filipino culture and history.

  A traditional Japanese style of Karate using hand and foot techniques in forms (kata), self-defense, and sparring. Instruction is given as a means of self-defense, physical exercise and personal development.

  The art of samurai sword or the katana, Japanese Sword/ Iaido emphasizes technique, body posture, concentration, and discipline. Students learn etiquette, drawing, cutting, and sheathing techniques.

  Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a self-defense art that focuses on grappling which positions the defender in advantageous positions, allowing him/her to physically manipulate his/her opponent. The defender does so by applying joint locks and holds, using proper body weight distribution and leverage on the ground.

  Jiu-Jitsu includes kicking and punching techniques, throwing, and joint-locks. With a mixture of traditional and modern techniques, Jiu Jitsu is an excellent form of self-defense.

  Judo is a Japanese Martial art derivate from Jiujutsu. Judo is best known for its spectacular throwing techniques, but it also involves considerable grappling on the ground utilizing specialized pins, control holds, arm locks, and Judo sumbission techniques.. Judo is based on the principle of using one's opponent's strength against them and adapting well to changing circumstances.

  Kendo is the art of sword fighting. Students learn to use a bamboo-made sword to strike effective blows on targeted areas of the body and develop competing skills, as well as the etiquette and philosophy behind it.

  Based on simple principles and instinctive movements, Krav Maga is a reality-based system designed to teach real self-defense in the shortest possible time. Learn to defend against common chokes, grabs, and bearhugs, as well as weapons such as guns, knives, and sticks.

  Students will obtain a well-rounded understanding of this traditional Northern Shaolin based style. Instruction provides insight into theory and application of Chinese martial technique while emphasizing a distinct stylistic philosophy.

  Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and is a very beautiful display of martial prowess and an exciting ring-sport. Not only is it is a fun way to stay in shape, but Muay Thai can also be an aggressive style of self-defense, that is very effective on the street. Muay Thai students will learn discipline, respect, and compassion as well as getting a glimpse into Thai culture.

  One of the most dynamic styles, Korean based Taekwondo promotes self-defense and personal development. The art signifies itself with the use of powerful kicking techniques as well as hand and ground tactics. *

  Yang Style Tai Chi focuses on balance and harmony within the concept of Chinese Taoism 'Yin-Yang.' Relaxation and concentration are emphasized in both the mind and body. The core of the body is strengthened and flexibility is promoted through gentle stretching and graceful movements. Mind and body are nourished, cultivated, and energized using slow, repetitive movements. Instructor will guide students to learn Yang 24 forms with additional breathing exercises which will lead to increased internal energy(Chi).

  Wing Chun Kung Fu is a southern style Chinese martial art designed to disrupt and disable an opponent quickly and efficiently. Famous as the style that the late Bruce Lee first studied, Wing Chun uses structure to overcome aggression, employing unique understanding of body mechanics, angles, and sensitivity to simultaneously defend and attack.
 
Information for all Martial Arts Participants: Training uniforms may be required for some classes. Please check with the instructor on the first day of class. Uniforms are available for quarterly rental at Gear Up - $15 basic uniform and $15 for Iaido. All class fees must be paid prior to the first class meeting.
