Summer 2008 - Children's Swim Program (ages 3 - 12)
All classes are open to children whose parents are part of the UCI Community.

The following revised American Red Cross Learn to Swim curriculum will be used to place children in appropriate groups. Each level is designed to build upon the previous level. Some skills will be repeated in subsequent levels. The prerequisite for advancing to the next level is successful demonstration of the skills from the preceding level. Please note classes may need to be adjusted for group participants according to age and ability. To view the details of each level, click on the title.
Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills
PURPOSE: spacerHelp children feel comfortable in the water.

spacer • Opening eyes underwater and picking up submerged object
spacer • Swimming on front and back using arm and leg actions
spacer • Recognizing a swimmer in distress and getting help
Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills
PURPOSE: spacerGive children success with fundamental skills
spacer • Moving in the water while wearing a life jacket
spacer • Submerging entire head
spacer • Front and back glide
spacer • Treading water using arm and leg motions
spacer • Open eyes underwater and pick up submerged object
spacer • Enter water by stepping or jumping from side
spacer • Recognizing a swimmer in distress and getting help
spacer • Bobbing in water
spacer • Jellyfish float
spacer • Swimming using combined stroke on front, back and side
spacer • Exit water safely using ladder or side
spacer • Roll over from front to back and back to front
Level 3 - Stroke Development
PURPOSE:spacer Build on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice
spacer • Kneeling or standing dive (shallow dive progression)
spacer • Rotary breathing in horizontal position
spacer • Jump into deep water from side
spacer • Bobbing wtih head fully submerged
spacer • Perform reaching assists
spacer • Front and back glide
spacer • Survival float, back float
spacer • Submerging and retrieving an object
spacer • Front and Back crawl
spacer • Butterfly-kick and body motion
Level 4 - Stroke Improvement
PURPOSE:spacer Develop confidence in the strokes learned and improve other aquatic skills
spacer • Safe diving rules
spacer • Feet-first surface dive
spacer • Elementary backstroke, breaststroke. butterfly
spacer • Dive from stride position or shallow dive
spacer • Front and back crawl
spacer • Tread water using sculling arm motions and kick
spacer • Swim underwater
spacer • Survival float, back float
spacer • Perform a throwing assist
Level 5 - Stroke Refinement
PURPOSE:spacer Provide further coordination and refinement of strokes
spacer • Learn survival swimming
spacer • Perform rescue breathing
spacer • Front and back crawl
spacer • Open turns on front and back
spacer • Standing dive
spacer • Tuck surface dive
spacer • Butterfly
spacer • Pike surface dive
spacer • Front flip turn
spacer • Elementary backstroke
spacer • Breaststroke
spacer • Backstroke flip turn
spacer • Sidestroke
Private Lessons
Private and Semi-private lessons are available for children 2 1/2* and up. The lessons will be available during regular group lesson hours, space permitting. Please contact Campus Recreation Services for availability. Registration now for Private swim lessons at Campus Recreation Services.
*Special note: All children must be potty trained and adults must remain at the pool during the lesson.

COST (for ARC members): $12 for privates, $20 for semi-privates ($10/student) for a 25 minute lesson.

Semi-private children must be at the same level, and must be grouped by the participants.
