What will I learn in Climb 1?
The purpose of the Climb 1 class is to teach new climbers the safety systems (equipment and belaying) of climbing that keep climbers safe. The class primarily focuses on the skills need to pass our safety/belay test. This class is meant for the beginner climber or somebody that needs to relearn the belay technique. This is not a climbing technique class (Climb 2), although some instruction in climbing technique could occur.

How can I become a wall member?
Any ARC member who successfully passes our safety/belay test is eligible for wall membership. Wall membership is on a quarter-by-quarter basis and costs $35 per quarter. The safety/belay test is good for one year and begins anew July 1 each year. Multi-year members must re-pass their safety/belay test annually. |

What is belaying?
Belaying is what the person on the ground is doing with the rope while the climber is climbing. It is a technique that allows the belayer to catch the fall of the climber. We teach this specific technique in our Climb 1 class.
|
Is it safe?
Statistically, rock climbing at the wall is one of the safest activities you can participate in here at the ARC. The equipment and systems involved with climbing are over-engineered and detailed. These same systems are used throughout the world. All members are current in these systems and trained wall supervisors are always on hand whenever the wall is open for climbing.
|
How do I get to climb here? Do I have to take a class?
Only current wall members can use the wall. Exceptions to this are for special events (such as Late Night) or trying the wall for the first time as a “first time climber.” You can become a wall member by passing our safety/belay test and paying a quarterly wall member fee of $35. Those who already possess the skills to belay need not take our Climb 1 class. New climbers, however, will most likely need to take the Climb 1 class.

Once I've passed the belay/safety test, can I come anytime that the ARC is open?
Once you have passed your safety/belay test and have paid your quarterly wall fee, you can use the wall anytime the wall is open (Sunday 7-10pm, Monday 7-10pm, Tuesday noon-3pm and 7-10pm, Wednesday noon-3pm and 7-10pm, Thursday 4-10pm, Friday 5-7pm, Saturday 10am-1pm).
|
How much does it cost to climb here? (and why do I have to pay to have a membership?)
The quarterly wall membership fee is $35. Basic ARC membership covers some of the services offered at the ARC but not all. Wall membership, similar to other campus recreation services like intramural and club sports, a wide variety of classes, and personal training, is an extra service that requires an extra fee.
|
Can I try out the wall?
Yes! First Time Climbers can try the wall for FREE anytime the wall is open. The wall is open Sunday 7-10pm, Monday 7-10pm, Tuesday noon-3pm and 7-10pm, Wednesday noon-3pm and 7-10pm, Thursday 4-10pm, Friday 5-7pm, Saturday 10am-1pm.
|
How hard is the climbing?
We change the routes on the wall every quarter and there is always a wide variety of climbing difficulty on the wall.
|
I don't have anybody to climb with. Can I still climb?
Absolutely. The climbing wall is a great place to meet others interested in climbing. Most of the wall members climb with whomever is around. Since all wall members have passed our safety/belay test, everybody is a good person to climb with.
