Capri Rating Description
This level allows rated skippers to sail our Capri 14.2's within the Newport harbor with up to 2 guests. There is a 18 knot wind limit for these boats. These are our basic teaching dinghy. All necessary skills to get the rating are generally taught in our Capri 1 and Capri 2 classes. Rating test includes: rigging and de-rigging the boats, basic sailing on all points of sail, capsize demonstration and more. (View the Capri Rating Checklist - pdf). Capri 1 skippers may also race in UCISA sponsored Capri races and some non-UCISA races (pending individual's racing rule knowledge).
Shields 1 Rating Description
This is the first shields rating - this level allows rated S1 skippers to take the boats out in the harbor and to the bell buoy. Skippers may take up to 4 guests on the shields and sail in winds up to 18 knots. All the necessary skills to get an S1 rating are generally covered in our Keelboat 1 and Keelboat 2 classes in addition to participating in rating tutor days to refine skills. Individual needs to have a current UCISA Capri membership to get an S1 membership. Rating test includes: rigging and de-rigging the boat, successfully sailing in and out of docks, sailing on all points of sail well, anchoring, man overboard simulated practice and more. The shields manual (in conjunction iwth practical knowledge) covers most of the material on this test. View the Shields 1 Rating Checklist (pdf).
Shields 2 Rating Description
This rating allows rated S2 skippers to sail out of the harbor up to a 3 mile radius and with a spinnaker. Individual must have a current UCISA S1 membership to get their S2 rating. View the Shields 2 Rating Checklist (pdf).
Shields 3 Rating Description
This racing rating allows rated S3 skippers to sail in UCI sponsored races in and outside the harbor. To achieve this rating, skippers usually have done some Capri racing and have taken the Shields "Fast" and Shields "Smart" sailing classes. This rating is given as part of a check out race. View the Shields 3 Rating Checklist.
Shields 4 Rating Description
This racing rating allows rated S4 skippers to race in the "in the bay" races and usually take inexperienced club members as crew. This rating is based on evaluation by our racing rater and the individuals race course participation. The "in the bay" races like the "Beer can" and "hibachi" races includes very congested conditions and can be very demanding.
S3 and S4 ratings are not automatic with skill completion. There is a level of performance under race conditions that also needs to be obtained.
Flying Junior Use: There will be a FJ rating beginning November 2007 (details available in October).
