Sailing Classes - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) |
 |
| |
What class should I take first?
- If you do not have any experience or have sailed just a few times, start with the Capri 1 (Beg Sail). You do not need any experience for this class, and you will get off to a good start.
|
What if I have sailing previous experience?
- We will help you find the right class depending on your experience. Look over the class descriptions to get a basic idea of where you might want to start.
- Generally if you have had a recent class in a similar dinghy, Capri 2 is a good class. If you have a lot of dinghy experience, you can often move on Keelboat 1, and if you have a lot of keelboat experience, you might want a more advance keelboat.
- Contact Campus Recreation Services (824.3738) and they can help you find the right class. If you are unsure, start a basic level, and if you find it is too “basic” we will help you move up.
- Just sailing with friends or family often does not provide the solid base that you get in a structured class, so going back the basics is often the best way to get started.
|
Do I need to know how to swim?
- YES, all participants must have swimming ability and you will be asked to verify that by signing a statement and the University waiver at the first class meeting.
- We define swimming ability as “the ability to swim 50 yards and tread water for 10 minutes and feel comfortable in the harbor or ocean.”
- If you would some swim instruction, check with Campus Recreation Services (824.3738) for the different opportunities.
|
What about lifejackets?
- (Also called PFD’s) We provide wearable life jackets.
- These are required to be worn in all sailing classes.
- We have well fitting wearable lifejackets.
- Wearing a lifejacket, can not be used as a substitute for swimming ability. It is adds to your ability to self rescue after a capsize, counteracts wet clothes etc. They also help keep you warm.
|
What should I wear?
- Always where closed toed shoes - like tennis shoes.
(You do not need any special boat shoes)
- Wear comfortable clothes and bring a jacket, especially in the winter and early spring.
- It is always a good idea to bring an extra set of dry clothes.
- Remember to use sunscreen and bring a hat or visor and a water bottle.
- Sweat pants and things that absorb a lot of water are not recommended.
- Avoid jewelry that might get caught on boat rigging, and leave valuables at home.
|
Will I get sea sick?
- Not likely at all, especially in the beginning level courses, where you are in the harbor. Inside Newport Harbor the water flat and calm. All Capri classes stay inside the harbor.

- A light drizzle is usually not a problem, but classes will be cancelled for substantial rain or storm conditions. Even in the winter, cancellations are very infrequent.
|
Can I sign up late for a class?
- We really need participants to be at the first on the water session so they get started right.
- Sometimes you can attend the first session of another class, and then join in the class you registered for, but you need to get permission from the boating director.
|
What if I have to miss a class, can I make it up?
- Sometimes we can accommodate a request, but not always. Please check with your instructor, but generally if you sign up for a class plan to attend.
