- UCISA Membership Rules - pdf document.
- How does use of the boats and my rating, relate to UCISA or the Sailing club membership?
- Once you are rated, and you join UCISA, the boat use is included. As a member of UCISA you can participate in the activities they sponsor.
- Campus Recreation, through the Boating program, oversees the boat use, tutoring and rating procedures and sponsors UCISA. See the rating procedures for testing information.
- UCISA offers a wide variety of sailing and social activities.
- Many UCISA members also volunteer and help with ratings, tutoring and classes as well as plan and organize their activities. Web site: www.sailing club.net
- How can I get more involved with the club?
- The Club web site has most of their events listed. We encourage you to get involved once you are a member.
- The work days are an important part of helping keep our costs down as well as a great way to meet members and learn more about the boats.
- The fun sails, races and other events are also a great way to get involved. Any of the UCISA board members can help you learn more too.
- Are their hourly fees for the boat use?
- No, your membership fees include almost unlimited use of the boats. There are no hourly fees.
- Some UCISA events have a fee to cover specific costs for that program or event.
- Can I join UCISA if I am not rated?
- Yes, many of their activities are open to those who are eligible for the program, but who have not passed their ratings.
- You can join as a “crew member”, and participate in additional activities.
- The ratings are required to skipper boats. Campus Recreation has the information on the Crew membership.
- Do I have to take UCI classes to get a rating?
- Can I get a rating if I am not going to join UCISA?
- There is no reason to get your rating if you are not going to join.
- The ratings apply to UCI’s program only.
- If you wanted a rating for use in another sailing program, you should go directly to that program and get their specific rating or checkout
- Do you have annual memberships?
- Annual memberships are available, starting each summer quarter. (During the last week of June)
- Regardless of when you join, memberships will expire at the end of spring quarter. After that date, you can only buy memberships for the academic year, or quarterly.
- Are memberships “pro-rated?”
- The only time there pro-rating is available, is the first quarter you are eligible to join.
- For example, if you passed your rating, midway though a quarter, we would pro-rate the cost.
- The program is such a good value, and our overhead cost continues throughout the year, we can not afford to “pro-rate”.
- How do I renew my membership?
- We mail out renewal notices each quarter to current members who will expire at the end of that quarter or year.
- You can mail or fax the renewal forms to Campus Recreation.
- Additionally, you may renew by phone as long as you have signed the waiver/form for that fiscal year (June-July).
- In person registration is handled by the Campus Recreation Services on the second floor of the ARC. Call for their current hours (949) 824-3738.
- Renewal forms are available on the Campus Recreation Web site. Fax (949) 824-4822.
- What if my membership has lapsed?
- If your membership has not been renewed or active for over 1 year, you may be required to be re-tested.
- At the least, the Boating Program Director will need to approve your membership.
- The need for or the extent of the re-certification required is based on length of lapsed membership, length of membership etc. We need to be sure that you are current on the boats and procedures.
- What if I want to “brush up” on my sailing?
- If you feel “rusty” on your sailing skills, please contact the sailing office (949)824-7592 and we will help you with some options. We want your sailing to be safe and enjoyable.
- Do you have spouse or family membership?
- If both spouses/domestic are rated skippers, you are only charged an additional $5 for UCI students/$10 for all other per quarter for the second membership.
- Proof of status is required. There are no provisions for dependent memberships.
- I just graduated am I still considered a student?
- Students who graduate are considered “students” for the next quarter. (1 quarter grace period).
- This usually applies to the summer after spring graduation.
- How do I prove that I am eligible?
- Current UCI students can be verified at the ARC.
- Alumni will need to show proof of graduation the first time you join. This usually means a copy of your diploma. Alumni are defined as having received a degree.
- Faculty and staff at UCI need to bring in their staff ID and those from other UC campuses need a pay stub or other verification of current employment.
- Affiliates need to contact the Membership manger at the ARC sales desk prior to joining to verify eligibility.
- Spouse/domestic partners need legal proof, and verification of the above.
- How do I get the equipment once I get my membership?
- The dock box combinations are found on your membership receipt from the Sales Desk. You will need to have them with you at the base.
- When the dockmasters or instructors are present, please see them prior to taking out a boat. If you loose the combinations, you may obtain a duplicate receipt by mail or fax, but they can not be given out over the phone.
- Only 1 or 2 quarters of combination are included on your receipt. You will be mailed the additional combinations that you have paid for, before they expire.
- Further details will be explained as a part of your rating test.
- Can I rent your boats by the hour?
- No, the ratings are intended for those who are planning on joining UCISA and continuing with the program.
- The rating tests are comprehensive, we do not have the staffing to check out boats for a one time use.
- Contact the Boating office if you want to set up a private lesson, or a one time sail. We can sometimes accommodate that as an option.
- I have my own boat; can I store or launch it at the sail base?
- No, there are no options for storage or launching of personal boats at the sail base.
