U LEAD Program Components

Low/High Ropes:
Student leadership organizations will be given the opportunity as a group to experience a state of the art high ropes “Odyssey” challenge course.  The Odyssey course stands 50 feet high and 360 feet long, and is designed to build self-confidence, teamwork, communication, awareness of strengths and limitations, trust, respect for others, and skills for dealing with anxiety and stress.  Once on the course groups are inspired to support one another, communicate effectively, problem solve efficiently, build cohesive relationships and take calculated risks.  This leads to great learning opportunities and great fun.
On the Water Kayaking/Sailing:
Student leadership organizations will be bused down to Newport Beach to develop leadership skills on the water kayaking or sailing.  Groups will learn boat handling skills as well as work together to complete challenging tasks.  Groups will have the opportunity to engage in tasks on the water that will focus on learning through experience, communication, risk taking, team building and responsibility to both team and the environment. (*Each group will experience one challenging day on the Odyssey Course and the next day exploring the water of Newport kayaking or sailing. Due to space limitations, please provide your first choice either kayaking or sailing and we will do our best to accomodate that choice.)
School Meeting/Planning:
Each group will be given the opportunity to spend time meeting and discussing items that are specific to your leadership team.  This time is spent planning and training for the upcoming year privately.  We will provide a quiet space equipped with tables, and chairs.  Topics may include your team’s vision, goals, mission statement, publicity and reaching the masses, or the planning of specific events.  These are just ideas of topics you might discuss.  This time is entirely planned by you to meet your leadership team’s goals and needs.
Information Sharing Session:
Leadership teams are given the chance to formally get together and share ideas.  Teams are encouraged to interact with one another to discuss past and future plans in regards to their school’s activities. Students learn what other schools are planning and explain what they are developing. These conversations are great because it givens students the opportunity to brag about their school and possibly generate new ideas from learning about other schools events.
Fun Activity:
All participants will have a chance to spend time together engaging in an activity TBA.
Housing:
Participants will be paired up by gender to share a dorm room on the UCI campus.  Bedding will be provided in each room.  It is the responsibility of the group advisor to provide a list of individuals who will room together.
Food:
UCI Dining Services will cater all meals.  Breakfast and dinner will take place in a UCI dining hall.  Lunches will be picnic style onsite at respective activity.
