RECREATION ACTIVITY CLASSES - MARTIAL ARTS (Winter 2019)    

Martial Arts Classes are open to all UCI students and ARC Members.
Winter Class Registration begins on Monday, 11/25! You can register with Visa and MasterCard online or via the UCI Campus Rec app or at the Campus Recreation Services desk (2nd Floor) with Visa, MasterCard, check or cash. Early registration is recommended. Registrations for all classes are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. All class fees must be paid prior to the first class meeting. *All martial arts classes are only open to current UCI students and ARC members.

For fall quarter, classes do not meet on Veteran's Day (Mon 11/11), Thanksgiving Break (Wed 11/27 after 8pm, Thursday 11/28 or Friday, 11/29).
WInter quarter classes do not meet on Monday, 1/20 (MLK) or Monday, 2/17 (Presdent's Day)

  A traditional Japanese style of Karate using hand and foot techniques in forms (kata), self-defense, and sparring. Instruction is given as a means of self-defense, physical exercise and personal development. *All martial arts classes are only open to current UCI students and ARC Members.

  Japanese Sword/ Iaido teaches a style of traditional samurai arts, dating from the late 16th century, focusing on the Japanese sword, the katana, It emphasizes technique, posture concentration and discipline , and student will learn etiquette, drawing, cutting and shear thing techniques, as well as a variety of other traditional Japanese weapons. This class requires a uniform to be purchased individually or rented quarterly from GearUp.

  Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a self-defense art that focuses on grappling which positions the defender in advantageous positions, allowing him/her to physically manipulate his/her opponent. The defender does so by applying joint locks and holds, using proper body weight distribution and leverage on the ground. This class requires a uniform to be purchased individually or rented quarterly from ARC GearUp. No classes on Monday 1/20 and Monday 2/17.

  Judo is a Japanese Martial art derivate from Jiujutsu. Judo is best known for its spectacular throwing techniques, but it also involves considerable grappling on the ground utilizing specialized pins, control holds, arm locks, and Judo sumbission techniques. Judo is based on the principle of using one's opponent's strength against them and adapting well to changing circumstances. A uniform called a "gi" is required for the class by at least the third session. The material for the gi should not feel like a pajama but be thick like a heavy jacket. This class requires a uniform to be purchased individually or rented quarterly from ARC GearUp. No classes on Monday 1/20 and Monday 2/17.

  Kendo, the "Way of the Sword," is a traditional Japanese martial art that places great emphasis on discipline, respect, and etiquette. The martial art is descended from swordsmanship (kenjutsu) and practitioners use bamboo swords (shinai) to strike targeted areas of their opponent. This class will focus on teaching proper kendo etiquette and technique. Students will engage in fun and challenging physical activity. Prior experience is not required. Uniform are optional and can be rented quarterly from ARC GearUp.

  Students learning Kung Fu will obtain a well-rounded understanding of this traditional Northern Shaolin based style. Instruction provides insight into theory and application of Chinese martial technique while emphasizing a distinct stylistic philosophy. No uniform is necessary, only comfortable clothing. No classes on Monday 1/20 and Monday 2/17.

Tuesday/Thursday 3:30pm - 4:50pm Sports Studio
  Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and is a very beautiful display of martial prowess and an exciting ring-sport. Learn to Punch, kick, and use elbows and knees. Muay Thai is a fun way to stay in shape, but it can also be used as an aggressive style of self-defense. Muay Thai students will learn to strike with power, develop discipline, treat others with respect and compassion as well as getting a glimpse into Thai culture. No uniform is necessary, boxing gloves are recommended.

Monday 6:00pm - 6:50pm Activity Annex
  A fundamental course in self defense with a simple multi-layered approach starting with situational awareness and minimizing your potential as a target. This will progress to hand-to-hand applications and use of improvised "tools" for defensive purposes. Basic evasion and escape techniques as well as strikes, kicks and take downs will be integral to the study. Advantages and disadvantages of various defensive applications and scenarios will also be discussed. Material will be cumulative. No classes on Monday 1/20 and Monday 2/17.

  One of the most dynamic styles, Korean based Taekwondo promotes self-defense and personal development. The art signifies itself with the use of powerful kicking techniques as well as hand and ground tactics.

  Wing Chun is a traditional Chinese fighting art designed for a smaller person to successfully deal with a larger person by removing certain natural physical advantages such as speed and power. The foundation is based on concepts and principles to govern how we posture ourselves, move, fight and train. Training uniforms may be required for some classes. Please check with the instructor on the first day of class. Uniforms are available for quarterly rental at Gear Up.
