RECREATION ACTIVITY CLASSES - MARTIAL ARTS

Fall 2022: Martial Arts Classes are open to all UCI students and ARC Members only. Registration opens on Tuesday, 9/6! You can register with Visa and MasterCard online or via the UCI Campus Rec app or at the Campus Recreation Services desk (2nd Floor) with Visa, MasterCard, check or cash. Early registration is recommended. Registrations for all classes are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. All class fees must be paid prior to the first class meeting.

For fall quarter, classes do not meet on Friday, 11/11 or Wed 11/23 - Sun 11/27. Please review the Campus Recreation Refund Policy (pdf)

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Dates: 9/27 - 12/1 Fee: $45 REGISTER NOW

  Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a self-defense art that focuses on grappling which positions the defender in advantageous positions, allowing him/her to physically manipulate his/her opponent. The defender does so by applying joint locks and holds, using proper body weight distribution and leverage on the ground. Class does not meet on Thursday, 11/24.

  Japanese Sword/ Iaido teaches a style of traditional samurai arts, dating from the late 16th century, focusing on the Japanese sword, the katana, It emphasizes technique, posture concentration and discipline , and student will learn etiquette, drawing, cutting and shear thing techniques, as well as a variety of other traditional Japanese weapons. Class does not meet on Friday, 11/11 or Friday, 11/25.

  A traditional Japanese style of Karate using hand and foot techniques in forms (kata), self-defense, and sparring. Instruction is given as a means of self-defense, physical exercise and personal development. Class does not meet on Thursday, 11/24.

Kendo, the "Way of the Sword," is a traditional Japanese martial art that places great emphasis on discipline, respect, and etiquette. The martial art is descended from swordsmanship (kenjutsu) and practitioners use bamboo swords (shinai) to strike targeted areas of their opponent.
This course will emphasize fundamental techniques and foundational principles of kendo. Students will learn proper form, footwork, and mechanics behind kendo movement, along with foundational concepts. This course is designed for participants who are new to kendo or for practitioners who would like to embellish their fundamental techniques. Prior experience is not required. Class does not meet on Friday, 11/11 or Friday, 11/25.

  Punching, kickboxing, elbows and knees paired with high intensity cardio training and calisthenic exercises provide you with an outstanding work out. In class we will practice striking the heavy bags, shadowboxing, focus mitts and other pads as well as do circuit style cardiovascular training. Class does not meet on Thursday, 11/24.

  Based on simple principles and instinctive movements, Krav Maga is a reality-based system designed to teach real self-defense in the shortest possible time. Learn to defend against common chokes, grabs, and bear hugs, as well as weapons such as guns, knives, and sticks. No uniform is necessary, wear comfortable clothing. Class does not meet on Wednesday, 11/23.

  Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and is a very beautiful display of martial prowess and an exciting ring-sport. Learn to Punch, kick, and use elbows and knees. Muay Thai is a fun way to stay in shape, but it can also be used as an aggressive style of self-defense. Muay Thai students will learn to strike with power, develop discipline, treat others with respect and compassion as well as getting a glimpse into Thai culture Be sure to bring full boxing gloves.
